Artist’s statement:
There are artists who paint the same way their whole lives, and there are artists who paint to sell like a product. These people sometimes we envy, they must feel secure and peaceful, knowing each day they will get up and do the same things, order to their lives.

But for us, art is about exploration and self-expression, it’s about painting from the heart, about intuitive response to everyday life, what you see or imagine that makes an impression. Everyone can paint and draw, it’s a gift you are born with, children take a brush to paper with total abandon, it’s these bursts of joy that delight us as adults, as artists we try to get back to this free state, before criticism, expectations, staying within the lines, getting a likeness, copying, approval.

We know these things because they have applied to us at one time or another in our journey as artists.

Then there is the whole get into a gallery experience, make a name for yourself. What sells. What is good, that is ground breaking, what is new, what is the next movement, what is too large, what is too small, what has too much color, what is not colorful enough, what makes a statement, what does not, what looks good over the sofa. Oh let’s not even go there.

It boils down to this, after 40 years of study and struggle in pursuing art, and it’s meaning, it’s the outsiders we adore, give us someone who has never studied art, has no expectations, paints for the love of it, paints in there dark and grimy bedrooms, with house paint, or mud or blood, who make marks because they are driven to, give me psychotic art, naïve art. Tramp art, self-taught art, children’s art, hobby art, bottle cap art, prison art, give me surprise and change and the joy of seeing through others eyes.
